CHAPTER 8: HOMECOMING

The flight back was a sombre affair, even on a Gulfstream G700. Mister Farnsworth’s personal valet and chef cried when we informed them their favourite cat—and employer—was staying abroad for a while.

Hannah was sad, too, and leaned against me as we sat on one of the jet’s couches, staring out the portholes at the dark skies over the Atlantic. When she wasn’t crying herself, she told me little stories about Mister Farnsworth—his habits and odd rituals. He was, she insisted, possessed of an excellent sense of humour, and filled with a zest for life that I confess I hadn’t noticed in all his lounging around and puking up lobster bisque. I guess, like many world-saving heroes, he got a little nervous before a mission.

After we landed back in the States, Hannah asked where I’d like to be dropped off. Since she already knew where I lived, I took the question to mean something else and held her hand in the back of the limousine and said, “Home.”

She kissed me then, on the lips this time, and I decided that was a perfectly valid reason to forgive someone for having tricked you into the world’s most useless master’s degree—barring the need to invoke any other Ancient Egyptian spells, of course—and dragging you off to Ancient Egypt to fight alien demons so that the world can be saved by cat dander.

I will note, however, that if you go visit the architrave of the tomb of Ptahshepses in the British Museum, there, among the many hieroglyphics of cats on the lintel, you may notice one that looks just a bit . . . tubbier than the others.

Mister Farnsworth no longer had a valet, but I suspect he produced an awful lot of offspring. So if you’re ever wondering why the earth isn’t a gaping hellhole filled with demons, you know who to thank.
